John W. Colloton



John W. Colloton has rendered 44 years of distinguished leadership to the University of Iowa 's Academic Medical Center, one of the largest and by all formal measures, one of the top Academic Medical Centers in the nation. His outstanding accomplishments in Iowa projected John into national prominence in healthcare, health science education and federal policymaking where his longstanding contributions have also been par excellence. Mr. Colloton, currently the University of Iowa 's Vice President for Statewide Health Services, has served for more than four decades in various administrative capacities at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. During his twenty-two year tenure as Director & CEO between 1971 and 1993, he is credited with leading a stunning metamorphosis in the hospital's philosophical, social, and physical dimensions of service provided to Iowans. He presently serves on the Boards of Directors of four profit-making corporations, including the Fortune 500 Baxter International, Inc., where he has served for the past twelve years. Mr. Colloton also serves as a Director of Wellmark, Inc. (Iowa-South Dakota Blue Cross & Blue Shield), Iowa State Bank & Trust Company, Radiologix Inc., and the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. This highly unusual blend of contributions to both the voluntary non-profit and corporate enterprise sectors gives Mr. Colloton the unique credentials with which to represent the leadership of the health industry. Mr. Colloton received his undergraduate degree at Loras College , which he earned (magna cum laude) in 1953. This was followed by two years in the U.S. Army at the time of the Korean War and in 1957 Mr. Colloton earned a graduate degree from the UI Graduate Program in Hospital and Health Administration.
