#1  PDL BioPharma Inc. said it will stop pursuing the sale of the company or its biotechnology assets after a firm offer failed to emerge, sending its shares down nearly 19% in extended trading. The company said it now plans to cut 260 jobs and restructure to focus on discovery and development of antibody-based drugs.

Genzyme Corp.

Genzyme Corp. announced the U.S. launch of the phosphate binder Renvela(R) (sevelamer carbonate) for dialysis patients, as well as significant progress in its international efforts to secure additional approvals for the product. Genzyme has submitted a marketing authorization application to the European Medicines Agency seeking approval of Renvela for the control of serum phosphorus in chronic kidney disease patients regardless of whether they are on dialysis.

Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGAA is expanding the capacity for producing dialysis products at its plant in St. Wendel, Germany. The Company will invest a total of approximately EUR 39 million over the next 12 months. About EUR 23 million will be invested in an additional building and two new spinning lines for hollow fibers, the key component of dialyzers (artificial kidneys).
